How to clean your baseboards without bending over
Scrubbing your baseboards by hand usually means getting down to your knees, but this is not always an option. Luckily, there are easier ways to keep the mop boards.
Follow these steps, and you’ll finish in no time.
Step #1. Get rid of dust and debris
First, you’ll need to remove any residue that could make things worse during baseboard cleaning. If you skip this step, you might end up with a muddy mess once you bring the cleaning solution.
- For dust: Wrap a microfiber cloth around a broom and hold it with a rubber band—you can use a pole too. Then, wipe the dust without bending over.
- For pet hair: A vacuum cleaner with a wand attachment is your best option to get rid of stuck-on hair.
Step #2. Prepare a cleaning solution
There’s no need to bring fancy store-bought cleaners for this task. An old-fashioned but reliable bucket of warm water with liquid soap will do the trick. You can also add ½ cup of white vinegar for better results.
Note: If your baseboards are made of wood, make sure to spot test your mix if you choose to add vinegar.
Step #3. Cleaning the baseboards
Most of the time, you won’t need more than a microfiber cloth to do the cleaning. Just attach a cloth to a broom (as you did in step #1) and dip it in the cleaning solution. Then, wring out the cloth and wipe your baseboards.
Don’t wipe too hard, as you don’t want to leave scuff marks that ruin your good-looking baseboards. Finally, to prevent water stains on your moldings, dry them with a clean cloth (you can also wrap the dry cloth around your broom.)
Why you should clean your baseboards frequently
Mop boards are often overlooked because of their tricky location. It may seem like it is not a big deal, but every time you open the door or sweep your floor, all that dust ends up on your baseboards. They are dirtier than you think!
However, if you dust your baseboards frequently (either with the vacuum cleaner or your broom,) you can let more time pass between thorough cleaning sessions.
